Opioid Overdoses – We Need to Talk

Opioid Overdoses – We Need to Talk

Sometimes it can be hard to feel the weight of a public health crisis until someone you know is personally affected. Issues seem far away and the potential risk seems small. Impact Spartanburg is challenging you to push beyond the easiest answer and dig deeper. If one in ten Americans are living with a substance use disorder in any given year, this is a topic that should make you pause. As one author powerfully stated:

“Why are we more worried about gluten than heroin, processed corn syrup than oxycodone, peanuts than hydrocodone?”

In a little over a year (July 2016 – September 2017) Emergency department visits for opioid overdoses rose 30% in all parts of the United States. Things need to change at every level from the federal government down to the individual.

The article below outlines the responsibilities of and opportunities for each group. Focusing in on community members they issue four challenges. Are you ready to accept this challenge?

  1. Learn about the risks of opioids. https://go.usa.gov/xn6um

  2. Learn about naloxone, its availability, and how to use it. https://go.usa.gov/xn6uV

  3. Store prescription opioids in a secure place, out of reach of others (including children, family, friends, and visitors).

  4. Contact SAMHSA’s National Helpline: 1-800-662-HELP for anyone who has trouble with opioid use. https://go.usa.gov/xn6uw
